Ron & Carol Paul's Wedding Story
She fell for the high school track star.

How did they meet? Ron and Carol met in high school. "He was the Pennsylvania state champion in both the 220-yard and 440-yard races, and I truly feel fortunate that I was the one that finally caught him!" Carol says.

The Bride Carol Wells, 20

The Groom Ronald Paul, 21

Wedding Date February 1, 1957

Wedding Location Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Number of Guests About 300

How did he propose? Ron proposed to Carol during the summertime following his junior year of college. The two were enjoying a picnic in the park when Ron asked Carol to marry him. Carol admits it wasn't a total surprise that he proposed, but she was astonished that she got a ring. "I assumed I would have to wait until after he graduated before we could afford a ring," she says.

What did they wear? Carol wore a white Chantilly lace gown with a bouffant tulle skirt and a silk illusion veil attached to a half hat. Ron wore a black tux and a white tie. One interesting tidbit: Ron still wears the same size today as he did 50 years ago on his wedding day.

Did the wedding have a theme? The couple married in the winter and exchanged vows at Carol's family church, Dormont Presbyterian Church, in Pittsburgh. The theme was decidedly winter white -- snow covered the ground outside; Carol held a cascade of white flowers; and Ron donned a white carnation boutonniere.

What was the wedding day like? Following the traditional 7:30 p.m. wedding ceremony at the church, a reception was held in a large ballroom with a live band at The Dormont New Century Club. Ron and Carol had their first dance as newlyweds to their favorite song, Doris Day's "When I Fall in Love." Later, the two cut into a four-tiered cake decorated with a traditional bride and groom cake topper.

The honeymoon? After Ron and Carol had made their getaway (their guests tossed rice), they immediately left on their honeymoon to Durham, North Carolina. The trip also doubled as a visit to Duke University, where Ron had been accepted to medical school and would eventually earn his medical degree.
