John McCain

Early years? Born into a family of military war veterans, John McCain’s father and grandfather were both U.S. Navy Admirals.

Military service? McCain entered the Naval Academy as soon as he graduated from high school and served in the military from 1958 to 1981. During his service in the Vietnam War, McCain was captured and tortured as a prisoner of war for five and a half years.

Political career? McCain’s political experience began in 1982 when he was elected in Arizona to congress. Shortly after, he was elected as Senator, and is currently serving his tenth year as such. McCain ran as a Republican presidential candidate hopeful in the 2000 primaries, but was defeated by President Bush.

Hot issues? Among his top issues rank government spending, abortion, and lobbying and ethics reform.

Education	Opposes nationally imposed standards and believes standards should be regulated by the states.

Environment-Energy	Supports limiting carbon emissions, and encourages nuclear energy prospects.

Health Care	Opposes a socialized healthcare system, and wants to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Immigration	Opposes amnesty. Supports border security and a stronger citizenry that attracts immigrants with job skills, education, and English proficiency. Voted to allow illegal immigrants to participate in Social Security; to establish a guest worker program; and to give guest workers a path to citizenship.

Iraq War	Voted for use of military force in Iraq. Supports sending additional troops to Iraq.

Same-sex Marriage	Opposes same-sex marriage, but supports legal benefits for same-sex partners. Says the issue should be left up to the states.

Taxes	Originally opposed 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, but now supports extending the tax cuts into 2010.

Women's Rights	Supports a bill that would require businesses to hire more women and minorities.
