John McCain

Early years? Born into a family of military war veterans, John McCain’s father and grandfather were both U.S. Navy Admirals.

Military service? McCain entered the Naval Academy as soon as he graduated from high school and served in the military from 1958 to 1981. During his service in the Vietnam War, McCain was captured and tortured as a prisoner of war for five and a half years.

Political career? McCain’s political experience began in 1982 when he was elected in Arizona to congress. Shortly after, he was elected as Senator, and is currently serving his tenth year as such. McCain ran as a Republican presidential candidate hopeful in the 2000 primaries, but was defeated by President Bush.

Hot issues? Among his top issues rank government spending, abortion, and lobbying and ethics reform.
